Do You Actually Need a Mobile App, or Just a Better Website?

By The Darklight Team

"We need an app" is one of the most common requests we hear — and one of the ones we push back on most often. Not because apps are a bad idea, but because a lot of the value people expect from an app is available from a well-built mobile website at a fraction of the cost and ongoing effort.

What a native app is actually good for

Apps make sense when you need offline functionality, push notifications as a core engagement tool, deep integration with device hardware (camera, GPS, biometrics), or when users will realistically open your product multiple times a week. Frequent, repeat, high-engagement use cases are where the investment pays off.

What a mobile website already handles well

If your goal is to be found via search, present information clearly, take bookings, sell products, or let people contact you, a fast, well-designed mobile website does all of this without requiring anyone to download anything — which itself is a major point of friction most businesses underestimate. No app store approval process, no separate iOS and Android codebases, no forced update cycles.

The real cost difference

Beyond the initial build, apps require ongoing maintenance to stay compatible with new OS versions, separate testing across devices, and app store management. A website has its own maintenance needs too, but they're generally lighter and don't carry the same platform-approval overhead.

  • Choose an app if: users need offline access, push notifications are core to engagement, or you need deep device integration
  • Choose a website if: discoverability, information, bookings or e-commerce are the primary goals
  • Either way: define the core action you want users to take before choosing the platform

We'd rather tell a client honestly that they don't need an app yet than build one that goes unused. If it turns out an app genuinely is the right call, that's a conversation worth having early — before any development starts.
